Minnesota’s Presidential Hopefuls Offer More Fodder for Colbert

Excerpts
Minnesota’s potential presidential candidates are giving Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert plenty of material these days, from Tim Pawlenty letting news of his candidacy slip on CNN (before backpedaling on the topic) to Michele Bachmann telling Iowa conservatives that the earth is 5,000 years old.
Last weekend, Bachmann gave an address to The Family Leader, a conservative Iowa group. While Bachmann made many controversial statements — including the debunked claim that Planned Parenthood “wants to be the LensCrafters of Big Abortion†and her charge that Minnesota’s U.S. Senate election was “stolen†for Al Franken — Colbert keyed in on statements about gay marriage, which he characterized as “shaking her anti-gay money-maker to win over the Family Leader leader†and “proving her anti-gay street cred.â€
“In 5,000 years of recorded human history,†Bachmann told Iowans, “has any society ever defined marriage as anything other than between men and women?â€
“Of course, everyone knows, the earth is 6,000 years old,†Colbert said, referring to the age some “young earth creationist†Christians believe the planet to be. “Which means those first 1,000 years were super gay.â€
(Scientific consensus puts the age of the earth at more like 4.5 billion years.) …
Colbert on Bachmann at the Family Leader:
Threat Level: Rainbow (Comedy Central, “The Colbert Report,” April 12, 2011) — The Family Leader’s Bob Vander Plaats believes same-sex marriage is just as dangerous as second-hand smoke. (02:48)

CNN: Bachmann’s Planned Parenthood claim is false (Andy Birkey, The Minnesota Independent, April 13, 2011) — CNN’s Anderson Cooper fact-checked Rep. Michele Bachmann’s remarks about Planned Parenthood on Tuesday, particularly Bachmann’s repeated claims that “Planned Parenthood wants to be the LensCrafters of Big Abortion.†Cooper found that claim, during a social conservative gathering for potential presidential candidates, to be incorrect. The Minnesota Independent’s check on that claim last year came to a similar conclusion. … Full report

Minnesota Court Rules Al Franken Won
Two years ago today, on April 14, 2009, IÂ reported that the three-judge panel in the Coleman v. Franken U.S. Senate recount trial issued its final judgment, ruling that Democrat Al Franken won the most votes in his 2008 Senate race against Republican Norm Coleman and was therefore entitled to an election certificate.
