U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq

As of Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at least 4,357 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 31,545 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s weekly tally.

Army Maj. David L. Audo, 35, Saint Joseph, Ill., died Oct. 27, 2009 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat incident. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 22nd Military Police Battalion, 6th Military Police Group, Fort Lewis, Wash.


Army National Guard Spc. Joseph L. Gallegos, 39, Questa, N.M., died Oct. 28, 2009 in Tallil, Iraq, in a non-combat incident [heart attack]. He was a vehicle mechanic assigned to the 720th Transportation Company, New Mexico Army National Guard, Las Vegas, N.M.


Army National Guard Spc. Adrian L. Avila, 19, Opelika, Ala., died Oct. 29, 2009 at Camp Buehring, Khabari Crossing, Kuwait, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related accident. He was assigned to the 1343rd Chemical Company, 151st Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Battalion, 115th Fires Brigade of the Alabama National Guard, Fort Payne, Ala.


Army Sgt. Christopher M. Cooper, 28, Oceanside, Calif., died Oct. 30, 2009 CSC Scania in Babil province, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat incident. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry, 172nd Infantry Brigade, Schweinfurt, Germany.


Army Spc. Lukas C. Hopper, 20, Merced, Calif., died Oct. 30, 2009 southeast of Jisr Diyala, Iraq, of injuries sustained in a vehicle rollover. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.


Army Spc. Jonathon M. Sylvestre, 21, Colorado Springs, Colo., died Nov. 2, 2009 at FOB Delta, Kut, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat incident. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Ga.

U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at least 833 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department.

Army Staff Sgt. Keith R. Bishop, 28, Medford, N.Y., died Oct. 26, 2009 of wounds suffered when the MH-47 helicopter he was aboard crashed in Darreh-ye Bum, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C.


Army Sgt. Josue E. Hernandez Chavez, 23, Reno, Nev., died Oct. 26, 2009 of wounds suffered when the MH-47 helicopter he was aboard crashed in Darreh-ye Bum, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Regiment (Airborne), Hunter Army Airfield, Ga.

Army Sgt. 1st Class David E. Metzger, 32, San Diego, Calif., died Oct. 26, 2009 of wounds suffered when the MH-47 helicopter he was aboard crashed in Darreh-ye Bum, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C.

Army Pfc. Brian R. Bates Jr., 20, Gretna, La., died Oct. 27, 2009 in in Loy Kariz, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.


Army Spc. Robert K. Charlton, 22, Malden, Mo., died Oct. 27, 2009 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries sustained from a non-combat incident Oct. 23 in Wardak, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.

Department of the Air Force civilian Frank R. Walker, 66, Oklahoma City, Okla., died of non-combat medical causes Oct. 28, 2009 at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 72nd Civil Engineering Directorate, Tinker Air Force Base, Okla.


Marine Sgt. Cesar B. Ruiz, 26, San Antonio, Texas, died Oct. 31, 2009 at Firebase Fiddler’s Green, Afghanistan, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province. He was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve, New Orleans.

Write-in Campaign: Day 16

One year ago today, on the 16th day of my write-in campaign against U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann in Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District, I reported that in the final week of the campaign I mounted a ground assault with an advertising blitz comprising ads in 25 newspapers across the district with a combined circulation of approximately 150,000.
