U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq

As of Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at least 4,416 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 31,929 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s weekly tally.

U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, at least 1,172 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 7,819 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s weekly tally.

Army Spc. Andrew J. Castro, 20, of Westlake Village, Calif., died Aug. 28, 2010 in Babur, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Army Sgt. Patrick K. Durham, 24, Chattanooga, Tenn., died Aug. 28, 2010 in Babur, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Army Spc. Chad D. Clements, 26, Huntington, Ind., died Aug. 30, 2010 in the Arghandab River Valley, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 4th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.


Army Capt. Dale A. Goetz, 43, White, S.D., died Aug. 30, 2010 in the Arghandab River Valley, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo. [Note: Capt. Goetz was the first Army chaplain killed in action since the Vietnam war.]


Army Staff Sgt. Casey J. Grochowiak, 34, Lompoc, Calif., died Aug. 30, 2010 in Malajat, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.


Army Staff Sgt. Jesse Infante, 30, Cypress, Texas., died Aug. 30, 2010 in the Arghandab River Valley, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 4th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.


Army Staff Sgt. Kevin J. Kessler, 32, Canton, Ohio., died Aug. 30, 2010 in the Arghandab River Valley, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 4th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.


Army 1st Lt. Mark A. Noziska, 24, Papillon, Neb., died Aug. 30, 2010 in Malajat, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.


Army Staff Sgt. Matthew J. West, 36, Conover, Wis., died Aug. 30, 2010 in the Arghandab River Valley, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 71st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group, Fort Carson, Colo.


Army Ranger Staff Sgt. Vinson B. Adkinson III, 26, Harper, Kan., died Aug. 31, 2010 in Logar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 173rd Brigade Support Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Bamberg, Germany.


Army Sgt. Raymond C. Alcaraz, 20, Redlands, Calif., died Aug. 31, 2010 in Logar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 173rd Brigade Support Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Bamberg, Germany.


Marine Sgt. Joseph A. Bovia, 24, Kenner, La., died Aug. 31, 2010 at Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province. He was assigned to the 3rd Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.


Army Spc. Matthew E. George, 22, Gransboro, N.C., died Aug. 31, 2010 in Logar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 173rd Brigade Support Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Bamberg, Germany.


Army Spc. James A. Page, 23, Titusville, Fla., died Aug. 31, 2010 in Logar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 173rd Brigade Support Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Bamberg, Germany.


Marine Lance Cpl. Cody A. Roberts, 22, Boise, Idaho, died Aug. 31, 2010 at Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Marine Lance Cpl. Christopher B. Rodgers, 20, Griffin, Ga., died Sept. 1, 2010 at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, while conducting combat operations in Helmand province. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Marine Lance Cpl. Joshua T. Twigg, 21, Indiana, Pa., died Sept. 2, 2010 at Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan, while conducting combat operations in Helmand province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Marine Lance Cpl. Ross S. Carver, 21, Rocky Point, N.C., died Sept. 3, 2010 at Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan, while conducting combat operations in Helmand province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Army Capt. Jason T. McMahon, 35, Mulvane, Kan., died Sept. 5, 2010 in Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with indirect fire in Jalalabad. He was assigned to the 184th Ordnance Battalion (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), 52nd Ordnance Group, Fort Campbell, Ky.
