Today, in response to Rep. Michele Bachmann’s shameful commentary yesterday afternoon on MSNBC “Hardball” with Chris Matthews, I’m announcing my write-in candidacy in Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District election for U.S. Representative. Â
Earlier today, I mailed a petition to the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State requesting that all write-in votes cast for me for the office of U.S. Representative in the Sixth District at the Minnesota state general election on November 4, 2008 be counted in accordance with Minnesota Statutes 204B.09, subd. 3. Â
On September 9, I challenged Rep. Bachmann for the Republican nomination because of my strong opposition to her support for the destructive neocon ideology that mired the United States in an unnecessary war in Iraq at a cost of thousands of American lives, hundreds of billions in taxpayer dollars, and untold damage to the international stature of the United States of America (see Statement on the Iraq War). Â
After losing the primary election, I suspended my campaign. Â
But now, Rep. Bachmann has dishonored her office and brought shame to the Sixth District and the State of Minnesota by calling for a media investigation reminiscent of McCarthy-era witch hunts to “find out [which members of Congress] are pro-America or anti-America.” Â
 Â
We cannot let that stand. Â
We cannot tolerate this festering brand of neo-McCarthyism in our midst. Â
We cannot and must not tolerate elected representatives who abuse their high office and play into the hands of our enemies by sowing the seeds of hatred and dividing America against itself. Â
Therefore, I am putting my name forward as a write-in candidate for disillusioned Republicans who can no longer support Rep. Bachmann and who wish to voice their displeasure without having to vote for the candidate of another party. Â

Dear Mr. Poser:Â Â
I’m writing to report that all write-in votes cast for me for the office of U.S. Representative in the Sixth District at the Minnesota state general election on November 4, 2008 have apparently not been counted as stipulated by Minnesota Statutes 204B.09, subd. 3. Â
For example, in my own precinct, Sartell P-5, the election results show that I received zero votes, despite the fact that my wife and I both cast ballots for me. I also received reports from voters in St. Joseph P-1, Watab Township, and other 6th District precincts that their write-in votes for me have not been counted. Â
The certified results show that 479 write-in votes were cast in the 6th District U.S. House race, approximately double the number of write-in votes cast in the previous two election cycles, when there were no organized write-in campaigns. Of the 479 write-in votes, just 20 were allocated to me, which I believe is an undercount. Â
Sincerely, Â
Aubrey Immelman Â

Dear Mr. Immelman:Â Â
Thank you for your letter regarding write-in votes cast for the office of U.S. Representative in the Sixth District at the Minnesota state general election on November 4, 2008. I am sorry for any delay in answering your letter. You state you believe that write-in votes have apparently not been counted in the sixth district race. Â
Minnesota Statutes section 204C.33 Subd.3 requires the State Canvassing Board to canvass the certified copies of the county canvassing board reports and prepare a report that states the number of votes received by each of the candidates by the counties in which they were cast. I have verified that the state abstract contains the information contained on the certified copies of the county canvassing board reports. Â
I believe at least three scenarios are possible in the misreporting of write-in votes on county canvassing reports: write-in votes may have been counted at the precinct-level but not reported on the county canvassing board report; write-in votes may not have been counted and reported by election judges in all precincts; or voters may not have marked the oval next to the write-in name and therefore the ballot was not separated by the tabulator to be tallied as write-ins. Â
The misreporting of any write-in counts on the certificate county canvassing board reports is certainly regrettable. The importance of correctly reporting write-in counts on the county canvassing board reports will continue to be stressed in future training sessions with county election officials conducted by this office. Â
Sincerely, Â
Gary Poser
