U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq

As of Friday, September 2, 2011, at least 4,474 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to iCasualties.org.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 32,159 U.S. service members have been wounded as of July 31, 2011, according to iCasualties.org.

U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Friday, September 2, 2011, at least 1,756 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to iCasualties.org.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 13,010 U.S. service members have been wounded as of July 31, 2011, according to iCasualties.org.

Army Sgt. Andrew R. Tobin, 24, Jacksonville, Ill., died Aug. 24, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit using small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.


Army Sgt. Devin J. Daniels, 22, Kuna, Idaho, died Aug. 25, 2011 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle using an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 546th Transportation Company, 82nd Sustainment Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, N.C.


Army Pfc. Jesse W. Dietrich, 20, Venus, Texas, died Aug. 25, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.


Army Pfc. Brandon S. Mullins, 21, Owensboro, Ky., died Aug. 25, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.


Army Sgt. Colby L. Richmond, 28, Providence, N.C., died Aug. 25, 2011 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle using an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 546th Transportation Company, 82nd Sustainment Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, N.C.


Army Spc. Michael C. Roberts, 23, Watauga, Texas, died Aug. 27, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 561st Military Police Company, 716th Military Police Battalion, 101st Sustainment Brigade, Fort Campbell, Ky.


Army Spc. Douglas J. Green, 23, Sterling, Va., died Aug. 28, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.


Army Pfc. Alberto L. Obod Jr., 26, Orlando, Fla., died Aug. 28, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered during a vehicle rollover. He was assigned to the 391st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Bamberg, Germany.


Army Spc. Dennis James Jr., 21, Deltona, Fla., died Aug. 31, 2011 of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device in Wardak province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Polk, La.

Two years ago today, on September 2, 2009, I reported that U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, in a fiery speech at an Independence Institute fundraiser in Denver that at times sounded more like the plot of a slasher movie, railed against the dangers of health care reform and other Democratic initiatives, warning the proposals “have the strength to destroy this country forever” and calling on her audience to “make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing.”

Campaign Against Michele Bachmann: Day 50

Three years ago today, on September 2, 2008 — the 50th day of my 2008 campaign against incumbent U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann for the Republican nomination in Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District — I reminded voters that there was just one week left until the September 9, 2008 Minnesota state open primary election, which offered disaffected Republicans, independents, and Democrats an opportunity to join forces and vote Rep. Bachmann out of office in the Republican open primary.
