U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq

As of Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at least 4,436 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to iCasualties.org.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 32,009 U.S. service members have been wounded as of Dec. 31, 2010, according to iCasualties.org.

Army Spc. Lashawn D. Evans, 24, Columbia, S.C., died Feb. 15, 2011 in Baghdad province, Iraq, in a noncombat incident. He was assigned to the 1st Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division,Fort Riley, Kan.

U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at least 1,476 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to iCasualties.org.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 9,971 U.S. service members have been wounded as of Jan. 31, 2011, according to iCasualties.org.

Army Spc. Ryan A. Gartner, 23, Dumont, N.J., died Feb. 1, 2011 in Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained in a non-combat incident. He was assigned to 201st Military Intelligence Battalion, Fort Sam Houston, Joint Base San Antonio, Texas.


Marine Cpl. Lucas T. Pyeatt, 24, West Chester, Ohio, died Feb. 5, 2011 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Radio Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Army Sgt. Patrick R. Carroll, 25, Norwalk, Ohio, died Feb. 7, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 319th Military Intelligence Battalion, 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, N.C.


Marine Lance Cpl. Aaron M. Swanson, 21, Jamestown, N.Y., died Feb. 7, 2011 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, Buffalo, N.Y.


Army Spc. Nathan B. Carse, 32, Harrod, Ohio, died Feb. 8, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to 2nd Engineer Battalion, 176th Engineer Brigade, White Sands Missile Range, N.M.

One year ago today, I reported that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed that Iran had produced its first batch of uranium enriched to a higher level of 20 percent, saying his country would not be bullied by the West into curtailing its nuclear program a day after the U.S. imposed new sanctions. I also featured a psychological evaluation of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, including a personality profile and threat assessment, which I conducted at the Unit for the Study of Personality in Politics.

North Korea Missile Launch?

North Korea fuels missile, stokes fears (NBC Nightly News, April 3, 2010) — U.S. officials say North Korea may be close to launching a long-range missile rocket that was being fueled. North Korea says its intention is simply to launch a satellite into space. NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski reports. (01:07)

Two years ago today, on Feb. 11, 2009, I reported that a U.S. spy satellite had captured an image of preparations at a North Korean missile site previously used for Taepodong-2 missile launch operations and that 19 people were killed in Taliban suicide attacks on Afghan government sites in Kabul.
