Recently, the MSNBC special report “Rise of the New Right: A Hardball Documentary with Chris Matthews” took a hard look at the current surge of of rightwing anger and anti-government fervor — a trend I’ve documented since the election of Barack Obama as president. On June 16, I reported on the original cablecast of the documentary. Now, in a 6-day period, I’m featuring a different segment of the six-part series each day.

Racial incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama, including schoolchildren chanting “assassinate Obama,” racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars, and Black figures hung from nooses, are shattering the post-election illusion of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America. There have been “hundreds” of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.

FROM THE ARCHIVES: One Year Ago — July 8, 2009

Iraq-Afghanistan Casualties

One-year retrospective: One year ago today, I provided my weekly report of U.S. military deaths in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan), compiled from U.S. Department of Defense News Releases.

Army Staff Sgt. Timothy David, 28, Gladwin, Mich., died June 28, 2009 in Sadr City, Iraq, of wounds suffered earlier in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Staff Sgt. David was a senior sniper on his sixth tour of duty, having previously served two tours in Afghanistan and three tours in Iraq.

In high school, David was a member of his school’s football and track teams. “He got the most out of his ability,” said Jim Emery, the boys’ track coach. “He had a good year in the high jump his senior year.”

He is survived by his parents, Michael and Linda David.
