Recently, “Hardball” host Chris Matthews took a hard look at the surge of of rightwing anger and anti-government fervor — a trend I’ve been documenting since the election of Barack Obama as president — in the MSNBC special report, “Rise of the New Right: A Hardball Documentary with Chris Matthews.” On June 16, I reported on the original cablecast of the documentary. For the next 6 days, I’ll feature a segment of the six-part series each day.

Deadly Day for U.S. in Afghanistan

Video

Deadly day for U.S. troops (NBC Nightly News, July 6, 2009) — Four U.S. troops were killed in a roadside bomb attack on U.S. military trainers in northern Afghanistan; another two were killed in an attack in the south, and one died after a firefight in the eastern part of the country. NBC’s Brian Williams reports. (00:23)

One-year retrospective: One year ago today, I reported that seven U.S. troops died in three attacks in Afghanistan, on the same day that Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, issued new guidelines limiting the use of airstrikes against residential compounds and other locations likely to produce civilian casualties, alienating Afghan villagers and causing loss of support for the Afghan government and the international mission.
