Two U.S. Service Members Killed at Afghan Camp Where Prince Harry is Based

Deadly week for U.S. in Afghanistan (NBC Nightly News, Sept. 15, 2012) — The Taliban indicates that deadly attacks on U.S. personnel in Afghanistan were in response to an anti-Islam video. NBC’s Atia Abawi reports. (01:22)

Two U.S. members of the NATO force in Southern Afghanistan were killed and several others were wounded Friday night in a complex attack on the U.S. Marine half of Camp Bastion/Leatherneck — the same camp where Britain’s Prince Harry is based — U.S. and NATO officials told NBC News. …

All of the casualties appeared to be Americans, NATO officials said.

The Leatherneck half of the joint NATO operations center in Helmand Province is home to members of the First Marine Expeditionary Force, which serves as the southwest regional command.

The attack, involving small arms and mortars, was launched against the International Security Assistance Force shortly after midnight local time. Casualty assessments were still under way, but Camp Leatherneck took the brunt of the attack, officials said. …

The Taliban launched what it called the “Harry Operations” on Monday, threatening to do everything in its power to kill Prince Harry, 27, who is third in line to the British throne, after British forces announced his four-month deployment to Camp Bastion.

Apart from the significance of the prince’s being based there, the attack is notable as the worst yet on Camp Bastion/Leatherneck.

In March, a civilian Afghan worker tried to assassinate U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta by driving his car into Panetta’s plane as it arrived at the camp. The assailant died from burns; a British serviceman was injured.

Oil Spill: Bachmann Bats for BP

Photo collage posted by Avidor on the Dump Bachmann blog, June 23, 2010. The image of Michele Bachmann is from a junket to Alaska during her 2008 reelection campaign to promote oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve (ANWR).

One year ago today, I reported that Rep. Michele Bachmann attacked President Barack Obama’s proposal for BP to arrange a $20 billion escrow account to pay for damages from the Gulf of Mexico oil gusher and aid spill victims — calling it a “redistribution-of-wealth fund,” warning BP’s chairman not to be an Obama “chump,” and predicting $9-a-gallon gasoline.

Terrorists Recruit for Cyberwar

For nearly two decades, al-Qaida and groups it’s inspired have tried to attack U.S. and other Western targets across the world, with mixed results.

Two years ago today, on June 18, 2009, I reported that intelligence reports indicated that terrorist groups that have long used the Internet to spread propaganda were increasingly tapping the Web to teach Islamic extremists how to be hackers, recruiting techies capable of breaching government or other sensitive network systems for cyberwarfare, and raising money through online fraud.
