7 U.S. Soldiers Die in Iraq Helicopter Crash

BAGHDAD — Seven U.S. soldiers were killed west of Basra in southern Iraq early Thursday when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed as it was flying into the country from Kuwait. …

Seventy U.S. helicopters have gone down since the war started in March 2003. Of those, 36 were confirmed to have been shot down. …

Car Bomb Kills 7 in Market South of Iraqi Capital

BAGHDAD — A car bomb exploded Friday at a market south of Baghdad in a region that was once the scene of frequent attacks on Shiites, killing seven people and wounding 21 others, police and hospital officials said. …

After Friday’s bombing, crowds of people upset at the failure of security forces to prevent the attack threw stones at a convoy carrying an Iraqi army general who came to inspect the scene. The general’s guards fired in the air and the general had to quickly leave the area. …

Security Developments in Iraq

Following are security developments in Iraq on Sept. 18, 2008 as reported by Reuters.

MOSUL – Gunmen killed a couple and wounded four people, including two of the couple’s children in an attack on their home in western Mosul, 240 miles north of Baghdad, police said.

MOSUL – A roadside bomb killed three soldiers when it struck their patrol in northern Mosul, police said.

TAL AFAR – Two roadside bombs wounded nine civilians in Tal Afar, 260 miles northwest of Baghdad, police said.

MOSUL – Police found the body of a man and a woman in western Mosul, police said.

MOSUL – Gunmen killed two retired security personnel in two separate drive-by shootings in different parts of Mosul, police said.

KIRKUK – Gunmen wounded a government employee in a drive-by shooting in central Kirkuk, 155 miles north of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD – A roadside bomb wounded seven government guards when it exploded near their convoy as they escorted Baghdad Municipality employees in northeast Baghdad, police said.

MOSUL – Gunmen killed Mosul’s deputy governor for technical affairs, Shamel Younis, when he was leaving a mosque in northern Mosul, on Wednesday, police said.

SHAWAN – Police found the bodies of two men bearing gunshot wounds and signs of torture on Wednesday in Shawan, 165 miles north of Baghdad, police said.

NEAR KIRKUK – Police found the body of a woman riddled with bullet wounds on Wednesday in the small town of Chiman, just outside Kirkuk, police said.

MOSUL – The body of a man was found in Mosul, police said.

MOSUL – A civilian died in clashes between the security forces and gunmen in east Mosul on Wednesday, police said.

BAGHDAD – A roadside bomb exploded near a police patrol, wounding two civilians in the Karrada district of central Baghdad, police said.

HAWIJA – A roadside bomb near a passing car wounded two people near the town of Hawija, 130 miles north of Baghdad, police said.

North Korea Preparing to Restart Nuclear Reactor

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea upped the ante in the standoff over its nuclear program, confirming Friday that it is restoring a key atomic reactor and saying it no longer cares to be removed from Washington’s terrorism blacklist. …

The U.S. promised to remove North Korea from the terrorism list after it declares its nuclear programs, which Pyongyang did in June. …

Friday’s announcement was the first North Korean confirmation that the regime is undoing the disarmament process begun in November 2007 as part of a nuclear deal hashed out during talks with China, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the U.S.

Analysts said the North commonly uses such threats and hard-line tactics to negotiate more generous terms.
