Army Reserve Spc. Daniel L. Elliott, 21, Youngsville, N.C., died July 15, 2011 in Basra, Iraq, when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 290th Military Police Brigade, 200th Military Police Command, U.S. Army Reserve, Cary, N.C.

Army Sgt. Mark A. Cofield, 25, Colorado Springs, Colo., died July 17, 2011 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat incident. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, N.C.

U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Friday, July 22, 2011, at least 1,679 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to iCasualties.org.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 11,181 U.S. service members have been wounded as of April 30, 2011, according to iCasualties.org.

Marine Lance Cpl. Christopher L. Camero, 19, Kailua Kona, Hawaii, died July 15, 2011 of wounds suffered July 6 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Army Staff Sgt. Wyatt A. Goldsmith, 28, Colville, Wash., died July 15, 2011 at Camp Bastion Hospital, Afghanistan of injuries suffered July 15 when insurgents attacked his unit with rocket-propelled grenade fire in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Army Sgt. Lex L. Lewis, 40, Rapid City, S.D., died July 15, 2011 of injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small-arms fire in Farah province, Afghanistan. He was a cavalry scout assigned to 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.

Army Reserve Cpl. Raphael R. Arruda, 21, Ogden, Utah, died July 16, 2011 in Kunar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 416th Theater Engineer Command, U.S. Army Reserve, Ogden, Utah.

Army Spc. Frank R. Gross, 25, Oldsmar, Fla., died July 16, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan of wounds sustained in Khowst province when an improvised explosive device caused a military vehicle rollover. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 38th Cavalry Regiment, 504th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Kenneth B. Elwell, 33, of Holland, Pa., died July 17, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Army Pfc. Tyler M. Springman, 19, Hartland, Maine, died July 17, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Iraq Security Remains Fragile

One year ago today, I reported that a car bomb outside a Shiite mosque near Baqouba, Iraq, killed 15 people — the third deadly attack in the region in as many days – while a U.S. soldier was killed in a separate bombing in the same province. Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, the Taliban claimed it shot down a helicopter that crashed in southern Afghanistan, killing two U.S. service members.

Three years ago today, on July 22, 2008 — the eighth day of my 2008 campaign against incumbent U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann for the Republican nomination in Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District — I reported being inundated with questionnaires from special interest groups. I also addressed the seemingly dim prospects for the Republican Party in the 2008 election and commented that the GOP generally faced a bleak outlook for the foreseeable future (see also “Future of the Republican Party”).
