U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq

As of Friday, October 21, 2011, at least 4,479 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to iCasualties.org.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 32,200 U.S. service members have been wounded as of Sept. 30, 2011, according to iCasualties.org.


Army National Guard Staff Sgt. James R. Leep Jr., 44, Richmond, Va., died Oct. 17, 2011 in Babil province, Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry Regiment, 116th Brigade Combat Team, Virginia National Guard, Portsmouth, Va.

U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Friday, October 21, 2011, at least 1,814 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to iCasualties.org.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 14,327 U.S. service members have been wounded as of Sept. 30, 2011, according to iCasualties.org.

Army Spc. Jeremiah T. Sancho, 23, Palm Bay, Fla., died Oct. 13, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.


Army Staff Sgt. Houston M. Taylor, 25, Hurst, Texas, died Oct. 13, 2011 in Kunar province, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.


Army Spc. Michael D. Elm, 25, Phoenix, Ariz., died Oct. 14, 2011 in Khowst, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Knox, Ky.


Navy Chief Petty Officer Raymond J. Border, 31, West Lafayette, Ohio, died Oct. 19, 2011 in an IED attack while assessing a route in Paktika province, Afghanistan. Border, a Navy Seabee, was assigned to a provincial reconstruction team in Paktika province, Afghanistan. His home unit was Navy Mobile Construction Battalion 74 in Gulfport, Miss.


Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Jorge M. Oliveira, 33, Newark, N.J., died Oct. 19, 2011 in Paktika province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the Security Forces Platoon of the 2nd Battalion, 113th Infantry Regiment, 50th Brigade Combat Team, New Jersey National Guard, Riverdale, N.J.

Two years ago today, on October 21, 2009, I reported that Rep. Michele Bachmann, eager for a few minutes in the media limelight but evincing little appreciation of Sacrifice in Service to Country, colluded with talk-show host Laura Ingraham in a drive-by dissing of decorated war hero Bob Dole, essentially depicting him as a loser.

Three years ago today, on October 21, 2008, on the third day of my write-in campaign against U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann in Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District, I thanked supporters for their messages of encouragement and online contributions and published excerpts from Nick Coleman’s Oct. 21, 2008 Star Tribune column, “Republican angered by Bachmann revives candidacy.”
