U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq

As of Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at least 4,421 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 31,951 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s most recent weekly tally.

Army Spc. John Carrillo Jr., 20, Stockton, Calif., died Sept. 24, 2010 in Fallujah, Iraq, of injuries sustained Sept. 23 in a non-combat incident. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.


Army Pfc. Gebrah P. Noonan, 26, Watertown, Conn., died Sept. 24, 2010 in Fallujah, Iraq, of injuries sustained Sept. 23 in a non-combat incident. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.


Army National Guard Spc. Marc C. Whisenant, 23, Holly Hill, Fla., died Sept. 24, 2010 in Camp Buehring, Kuwait, of injuries sustained in a military vehicle rollover. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 124th Infantry Regiment, Florida National Guard, Miami, Fla.

U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at least 1,200 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 8,040 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s most recent weekly tally.

Marine Lance Cpl. Joshua S. Ose, 19, Hernando, Miss., died September 20, 2010 when he was struck by small-arms fire while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Army Lt. Col. Maj. Robert F. Baldwin, 39, Muscatine, Iowa, died Sept. 21, 2010 in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crash during combat operations in Qalat, Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was an Aviation Liaison Officer assigned to Brigade Headquarters, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Air Force Senior Airman Michael J. Buras, 23, Fitzgerald, Ga., died Sept. 21, 2010 of wounds suffered as the result of an improvised explosive device detonation in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 99th Civil Engineer Squadron, Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.


Army Sgt. Marvin R. Calhoun Jr., 23, Elkhart, Ind., died Sept. 21, 2010 in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crash during combat operations in Qalat, Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Navy Lt. (SEAL) Brendan J. Looney, 29, Owings, Md., died Sept. 21, 2010 in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crash in Ayatalah village during combat operations in Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to a West Coast-based SEAL Team.


Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jonah D. McClellan, 26, St. Louis Park, Minn., died Sept. 21, 2010 in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crash during combat operations in Qalat, Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was a helicopter pilot assigned to the 5th Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Navy Senior Chief Cryptologic Technician (Collection) David B. McLendon, 30, Thomasville, Ga., died Sept. 21, 2010 in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crash during combat operations in Ayatalah Village, Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit.


Navy Special Warfare Operator 3rd Class (SEAL) Denis C. Miranda, 24, Toms River, N.J., died Sept. 21, 2010 in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crash during combat operations in the Daychopan district of Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to an East Coast-based SEAL Team.


Army Staff Sgt. Joshua D. Powell, 25, Pleasant Plains, Ill., died Sept. 21, 2010 in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crash during combat operations in Qalat, Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was a helicopter crew chief assigned to the 6th Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Navy Special Warfare Operator 2nd Class (SEAL) Adam O. Smith, 26, Hurland, Mo., died Sept. 21, 2010 in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crash in Ayatalah village during combat operations in Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to an East Coast-based SEAL Team.

He was a helicopter pilot assigned to the 5th Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Marine Lance Cpl. Anthony J. “Chuckie” Rosa, 20, Swanton, Vt., died Sept. 23, 2010 at Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Dawson, 20, Tunica, Miss., died Sept. 24, 2010 near Combat Outpost Carwile of wounds suffered when his military vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device while traveling between Ghanzi and Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, U.S. Army, Alaska, Fort Richardson, Alaska.


Army Pfc. Jaysine P. S. Petree, 19, Yigo, Guam, died Sept. 24, 2010 near Combat Outpost Carwile of wounds suffered when her military vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device while traveling between Ghanzi and Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. She was assigned to the 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, U.S. Army, Alaska, Fort Richardson, Alaska.


Army Pfc. Clinton E. Springer II, 21, Sanford, Maine, died Sept. 24, 2010 in Kabul, Afghanistan, in a non-combat incident at Camp Alamo. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.

Morrison, 23, Cincinnati, Ohio, died Sept. 26, 2010 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his military vehicle with an improvised explosive device on Sept. 25 at Forward Operating Base Frontenac. He was assigned to the 20th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.


Army Sgt. Mark A. Simpson, 40, Peoria, Ill., died Sept. 26, 2010 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his military vehicle with an improvised explosive device on Sept. 25 at Forward Operating Base Frontenac. He was assigned to the 20th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

One year ago today, I reported that Young Americans for Liberty refused to publicize Michele Bachmann’s appearance with Ron Paul at a University of Minnesota rally, saying, “We don’t feel that we can promote her in good faith, because she represents none of the libertarian principles that we joined this group for.”

After the Primary Election: Day 19

Two years ago today, on the 19th day after losing my 2008 primary challenge against U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann in Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District, in line with my focus on national security, I reported on violence in Iraq’s disputed Kurdish region and bombings in Baghdad, posted a daily summary of security incidents in Iraq, and documented political assassinations and kidnappings in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
