U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq

As of Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, at least 4,426 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 31,981 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s weekly tally.

U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at least 1,260 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 9,095 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s most recent weekly tally.

Army Staff Sgt. Adam L. Dickmyer, 26, Winston Salem, N.C., died Oct. 28, 2010 near Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Army Spc. Pedro A. Maldonado, 20, Houston, Texas, died Oct. 29, 2010 in Kandalay, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Army Spc. Diego A. Solorzano-Valdovinos, 24, Huntington Park, Calif., died Oct. 29, 2010 in Landstuhl, Germany, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit on Oct. 27 with small-arms fire in Yahya Khel district in Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Army Spc. Brett W. Land, 24, Wasco, Calif., died Oct. 30, 2010 in Zhari district, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Army Spc. Jonathan M. Curtis, 24, Belmont, Mass., died Nov. 1, 2010 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Army Pfc. Andrew N. Meari, 21, Plainfield, Ill., died Nov. 1, 2010 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Marine 1st Lt. James R. Zimmerman, 25, Aroostook, Maine, died Nov. 2, 2010 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Army Sgt. 1st Class Todd M. Harris, 37, Tucson, Ariz., died November 3, 2010 in Badghis province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.


Army Reserve Spc. James “Chad” Young, 25, Rochester, Ill., died Nov. 3, 2010 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 863rd Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy), 412th Theater Engineer Command, Army Reserve, Darien, Illinois.

One year ago today, I reported that Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, due for deployment to Iraq, went on a shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, killing 13 and wounding 30.

Karzai: Stop Air-Raiding Civilians

Two years ago today, the day after the 2008 election, I reported that Afghan president Hamid Karzai congratulated Barack Obama on his election as president of the United States and called on him to halt civilian casualties after U.S. warplanes bombed a wedding party — killing 37, mostly children — saying airstrikes cannot win the fight against terrorism.
