In an April 4, 2009, radio interview with Sue Jeffers on KTLK, U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.)Â warned that a new bill expanding the AmeriCorps community service agency could lead to the “brainwashing” of America’s youth.
Bachmann: “I believe that there is a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service. And the real concern is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go and work in some of these politically correct forums.”

The Republican fear, which is quickly spreading through right-wing pundits, is from some original language that would make AmeriCorps service a requirement for young people. That language has been stripped from the bill.
Rep. Michele Bachmann claims AmeriCorps is reeducation camps for young people (PoliticusUSA, April 6, 2009)
These daily paranoid ramblings from members of the GOP are putting the United States on the verge of becoming a one party country. When Republicans make outrageous claims like Bachmann does, it makes them look crazy, and turns the choice for voters into a contest between a party of the sane, and a party of the insane.
