American couple kidnapped in Yemen – Armed tribesmen kidnapped an American couple near the Yemeni capital Sana’a Monday, officials said. … Taxi driver Mohammed Saleh, who was driving the pair, said six gunmen stopped them on the road and took them to al-Hamra village. … On Sunday, it emerged that U.S.-born cleric Anwar Al-Awlaki had called on Muslims to kill American civilians in a video released by the Yemeni offshoot of al-Qaida. He sought to justify and encourage civilian deaths by accusing the United States of intentionally killing a million Muslim civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. … Full story

U.S. couple released by Yemeni tribe — Two U.S. citizens, a husband and wife, taken hostage by Yemeni tribesmen were released on Tuesday a day after they were seized near the capital Sanaa, a Yemeni government official said. “The Americans have been freed and handed over to the mediation committee,” a government official told Reuters. … Full story

One-year retrospective: One year ago today, I reported that a Katyusha rocket blasted Baghdad’s fortified government and military Green Zone compound overnight, killing a civilian working for the U.S. Department of Defense.
