Bachmann Hints at 2012 Run to ‘Stand up to Obamacare’

In New Hampshire, Bachmann hints she will run for president in 2012 rather than challenge Sen. Al Franken in 2014

Asked why she wanted to run for president, Rep. Michele Bachmann told Republican activists “because we need a person who is going to stand up to Obamacare,” the Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Speaking at a GOP event in New Hampshire Monday, Bachmann made the remark after she was asked why she did not try to oust Sen. Al Franken in Minnesota, her home state, rather than try for the White House, the Post said. …

The Post noted Bachmann has said she will make a formal announcement in June, but described her response as “the most definitive answer yet” and one which “eliminated” any doubt that she was preparing to run.

She said she was a “rock-ribbed, constitutionalist conservative,” according to the Post.

“Obama has to go and has to be replaced, but not just by anyone,” she added. “We need someone who is committed to taking that thing out (the health care law), because it is the crown jewel of socialism, and if it’s allowed to stand we will never get our country back.” [links added] …

The Post said “woman after woman” in the crowd of more than 100 Republican activists at the picnic said they hoped Bachmann would try to become the first female president. …

Iraq-Afghanistan Casualties

One year ago today, I provided my weekly report of U.S. military deaths in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Army National Guard Maj. Ronald Wayne Culver Jr., 44, of El Dorado, Ark. and Shreveport, La., died May 24, 2010 near Numaniyah, Iraq, when his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb. He was second-in-command of the 2nd Squadron, 108th Cavalry Regiment, Louisiana National Guard, Shreveport, La.

A 1989 graduate of Louisiana State University in Shreveport, Maj. Culver received numerous military honors during his 22 years in the Guard, including the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, the Louisiana War Cross and the Louisiana Commendation Medal.

“The Army has the seven core values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage,” said squadron Chaplain Capt. James Collins of Norman, Okla. “To me, Wayne exemplified those Army values. … He was a good husband, a good father and a good soldier, but most importantly, he was a good man.”

Wayne Culver was the son of Ronald W. Culver Sr. and Betty Culver, both of Shreveport. In addition to his widow Tracey Culver — the kindergarten and day care director for the First United Methodist Church of El Dorado — he leaves behind two children, Michelle Francis, 16, and Ronald Wayne III, 13. He was dedicated to his family, often taking his wife and kids to concerts and NASCAR races, attending all of Wayne Jr.’s football games, and taking Michelle to father-daughter dances.
