U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq

As of Friday, August 12, 2011, at least 4,474 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to iCasualties.org.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 32,159 U.S. service members have been wounded as of July 31, 2011, according to iCasualties.org.

U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Friday, August 12, 2011, at least 1,738 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to iCasualties.org.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 13,010 U.S. service members have been wounded as of July 31, 2011, according to iCasualties.org.

Army Spc. Mark J. Downer, 23, Warner Robins, Ga., died Aug. 5, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with a rocket-propelled grenade. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.


Marine Sgt. Daniel D. Gurr, 21, Vernal, Utah, died Aug. 5, 2011 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), Okinawa, Japan.


Army Spc. Jinsu Lee, 34, Chatsworth, Calif., died Aug. 5, 2011 in Kunar province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.


Marine Sgt. Daniel J. Patron, 26, Canton, Ohio, died Aug. 6, 2011 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Marine Sgt. Adan Gonzales Jr., 28, Bakersfield, Calif., died Aug. 7, 2011 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.


Marine Sgt. Joshua J. Robinson, 29, Omaha, Neb., died Aug. 7, 2011 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.


Army Sgt. Alessandro L. “Sandrino” Plutino, 28, Pitman, N.J., died Aug. 8, 2011 in Paktia province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Ga.


Marine Cpl. Nicholas S. Ott, 23, Manchester, N.J., died Aug. 10, 2011 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

NOTE

On Aug. 11, the Pentagon released the names of 30 U.S. service members killed Aug. 6, 2011 when a rocket-propelled grenade fired by a Taliban insurgent downed their Chinook helicopter on a combat mission. Babaker Shawkat Zebari, commander of Iraq’s military, called for U.S. forces to stay in the country for another decade, reinforcing his stance that his country’s military won’t be able to secure the nation on their own after U.S. troops leave at the end of 2011.
