U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq

As of Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at least 4,372 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 31,616 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s weekly tally.

Army Spc. Brushaun X. Anderson, 20, Columbus, Ga., died Jan. 1, 2010 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when he was attacked by an unknown assailant. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.

U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at least 1,445 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to iCasualties.org.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 9,256 U.S. service members have been wounded as of Nov. 30, 2010, according to iCasualties.org.

As of  Thursday, Dec. 31, 2010, at least 861 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department.

Bowman, 24, Crawfordsville, Ind., died Jan. 3, 2010 in Ashoque, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with multiple improvised explosive devices and small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.


Army Pvt. John P. Dion, 19, Shattuck, Okla., died Jan. 3, 2010 in Ashoque, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with multiple improvised explosive devices and small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.


Army Sgt. Joshua A. Lengstorf, 24, Yoncalla, Ore., died Jan. 3, 2010 in Ashoque, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with multiple improvised explosive devices and small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.


Air Force Senior Airman Bradley R. Smith, 24, Troy, Ill., died Jan. 3, 2010 from a bomb blast near Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained while supporting combat operations. He was assigned to the 10th Air Support Operations Squadron, Fort Riley, Kan.

More Honors for Bachmann

One-year retrospective: One year ago today, I featured year-end “honors” for U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann that couldn’t be accommodated in my Dec. 31, 2008 Minnesota 6th Congressional District Year in Review. I also reported that former U.S.-installed prime minister of Iraq Iyad Allawi — comparing the U.S. decision to hasten elections in Iraq with the Bush administration’s support for a vote in the Palestinian territories that was won by U.S. foe Hamas in 2006 — said that despite repeated warnings U.S. officials blindly foisted a Western-style democracy on Iraq, helping plunge it into sectarian bloodshed and a political morass.
