U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq

As of Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at least 4,397 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 31,810 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s most recent weekly tally.

U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Friday, May 14, 2010, at least 983 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department.

Marine Cpl. Jeffery W. Johnson, 21, Tomball, Texas, died May 11, 2010 after an IED exploded while he was on a dismounted patrol supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.


Marine Sgt. Kenneth B. May, Jr., 26, Kilgore, Texas, died May 11, 2010 after an IED exploded while he was on a dismounted patrol supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.


Marine Sgt. Joshua D. Desforges, 23, Ludlow, Mass., died May 12, 2010 while supporting combat operations in Marjah, Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Marine Sgt.Donald J. Lamar II, 23, Fredericksburg, Va., died May 12, 2010 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Army National Guard Sgt. Denis D. Kisseloff, 45, Saint Charles, Mo., died May 14, 2010 at Forward Operating Base Shank, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 1141st Engineer Company, Missouri National Guard, Kansas City, Mo.


Navy Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Zarian Wood, 29, Houston, Texas, died May 16, 2010 in Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device blast while on dismounted patrol in Helmand Province. Wood was assigned as a hospital corpsman to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force.
