U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq

As of Sunday, June 7, 2009, at least 4,311 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

Army Sgt. Justin J. Duffy, 31, Cozad, Neb., died June 2, 2009 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.


Army Sgt. Christopher M. Kurth, 23, Alamogordo, N.M., died June 4, 2009 in Kirkuk, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle was struck by an anti-tank grenade. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Army Spc. Charles D. Parrish, 23, Jasper, Ala., died June 4, 2009 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered earlier that day in Jalula, Iraq, when his vehicle was struck by an anti-tank grenade. He was assigned to the 5th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.


Marine Lance Cpl. Robert D. Ulmer, 22, Landisville, Pa., died June 5, 2009 as the result of a non-hostile incident in Taqaddum, Anbar province, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, II Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune N.C.

U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Friday, June 5, 2009, at least 621 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department.

Army Staff Sgt. Jeffrey A. Hall, 28, Huntsville, Ala., died June 1, 2009 in Nerkh, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.


Army Sgt. Jasper K. Obakrairur, 26, Hilo, Hawaii, died June 1, 2009 in Nerkh, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an explosive detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y. Army Spc. Roberto A. Hernandez, 21, Far Rockaway, N.Y., died June 2, 2009 in Paktya, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when his mounted patrol was attacked with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. He was assigned to the 549th Military Police Company, 385th Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne), Fort Stewart, Ga.


Army Spc. Jarrett P. Griemel, 20, La Porte, Texas, died June 3, 2009 at Forward Operating Base Gardez, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered from a non-combat incident. He was assigned to the 425th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.


Army National Guard Maj. Rocco M. Barnes, 50, Los Angeles, Calif., died June 4, 2009 in Afghanistan of injuries sustained during a vehicle rollover. He was a member of the Tactical Command Post, 40th Infantry Division, California Army National Guard, assigned as an individual augmentee to the 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force.


Army National Guard Staff Sgt. John C. Beale, 39, Riverdale, Ga., died June 4, 2009 near Kakar, Kapisa province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from an explosive and small arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 108th Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition Squadron, 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Georgia Army National Guard, Calhoun, Ga.


Army National Guard Maj. Kevin M. Jenrette, 37, Lula, Ga., died June 4, 2009 near Kakar, Kapisa province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from an explosive and small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 108th Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition Squadron, 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Georgia Army National Guard, Calhoun, Ga.

RAMADI – A bomb attached to a vehicle killed a police captain in Ramadi, 60 miles west of Baghdad, police said.

RAMADI – A suicide car bomber wounded the Anbar police chief, Major-General Tariq Yusuf, and five other people in Ramadi, police said.

DIYALA – A grenade attack on a U.S patrol killed one U.S. soldier in Diyala province, eastern Iraq on Thursday, the U.S. military said.

KARMAH – A roadside bomb killed three members of a state-backed Sunni Arab militia on Friday in Karmah, 12 miles northeast of Falluja, police said.

BAGHDAD – A roadside bomb exploded in central Baghdad, wounding two civilians, police said.

DIYALA PROVINCE – A grenade attack targeting an Iraqi army patrol killed one Iraqi soldier in Diyala province in the east of the country, the U.S. military said in a statement.

KIRKUK – A U.S. soldier died from injuries received during a grenade attack on a patrol in northern Iraq’s Kirkuk province, the U.S. military said in a statement.

MOSUL – A suicide car bomber targeting a U.S construction company convoy killed one Iraqi civilian and wounded five others in central Mosul, 240 miles north of Baghdad, police said, adding that one vehicle in the convoy was destroyed.

Following are security developments in Iraq on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 as reported by Reuters.

BAGHDAD – A bomb planted in a cafe in a mostly Shi’ite district of southwest Baghdad killed nine people and wounded 31 others, police said.

MOSUL – Gunmen killed one policeman and wounded another in Mosul, 240 miles north of Baghdad, police said.

MUSSAYAB – A roadside bomb wounded three people when it exploded in front of a greengrocer’s shop in Mussayab, 40 miles south of Baghdad, police said.

SHAWMLI – Gunmen in a car shot and killed a man in Shawmli, south of Hilla, 60 miles south of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD – A roadside bomb wounded three people when it exploded in the south Baghdad district of Doura, police said.

BAGHDAD – A U.S. soldier died on Tuesday of combat-related wounds after a roadside bomb struck his patrol in eastern Baghdad, the U.S. military said in a statement.

Following are security developments in Iraq on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 as reported by Reuters.

BAGHDAD – The Iraqi army and police discovered 14 decomposed bodies, handcuffed and riddled with bullets, in a mass grave on Monday, police said. The bodies, which appeared to have been buried 12-18 months ago. were found near the village of al-Muradiya, 40 miles northeast of Baghdad.

MUSSAYAB – A bomb placed outside a barber shop wounded two people, including a barber, in Mussayab, 40 miles south of Baghdad, on Monday, police said.
