U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Friday, August 31, 2012, at least 2,107 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to iCasualties.org.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 17,500 U.S. service members have been wounded as of Aug. 31, 2012, according to iCasualties.org.

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Curtis J. Duarte, 22, Covina, Calif., died Aug. 1, 2012 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.


Army 1st Lt. Todd W. Lambka, 25, Fraser, Mich., died Aug. 1, 2012 in Paktika province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered an enemy improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.


Army Pfc. Jesus J. Lopez, 22, San Bernardino, Calif., died Aug. 1, 2012 in Paktika province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered an enemy improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.


Army National Guard Spc. Kyle B. McClain, 25, Rochester Hills, Mich., died Aug. 1, 2012 in Salim Aka, Afghanistan, of wounds caused by an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to 1433rd Engineer Company, 507th Engineer Battalion, 177th Military Police Brigade, Michigan National Guard, Kalamazoo, Mich.


Army 1st Sgt. Russell R. Bell, 37, Tyler, Texas, died Aug. 2, 2012 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered an enemy improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.


Army Staff Sgt. Matthew S. Sitton, 26, Largo, Fla., died Aug. 2, 2012 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered an enemy improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.


Navy Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Milton W. Brown, 28, Dallas, Texas, died Aug. 4, 2012 from a noncombat-related illness in Rota, Spain. He was assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 137, Lemoore, Calif.


Marine Corps Cpl. Daniel L. Linnabary II, 23, Hubert, N.C., died Aug. 6, 2012 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Clayton R. Beauchamp, Weatherford, Texas, died Aug. 7, 2012 when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device while conducting a dismounted patrol in the Shaban District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was a hospital corpsman assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 6, 1st Marine Division (Forward), I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), Camp Pendleton, Calif.


Army Spc. Ethan J. Martin, 22, Lewiston, Idaho, died Aug. 7, 2012 in Koragay, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered enemy small-arms fire. He was assigned to 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.


Air Force Maj. Walter D. Gray, 38, Conyers, Ga., died Aug. 8, 2012 from injuries suffered during a suicide bomb attack in Kunar province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 13th Air Support Operations Squadron, Fort Carson, Colo.


Army Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin J. Griffin, 45, Laramie, Wyo., died Aug. 8, 2012 in Sarkowi, Kunar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered an insurgent who detonated a suicide vest. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.


Army Maj. Thomas E. Kennedy, 35, West Point, N.Y., died Aug. 8, 2012 in Sarkowi, Kunar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered an insurgent who detonated a suicide vest. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.


Army Green Beret Master Sgt. Gregory R. Trent, 38, Norton, Mass., died Aug. 8, 2012 in Bethesda, Md., from wounds suffered July 31 in Baktabad, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C.

Buckley, 21, Oceanside, N.Y., died Aug. 10, 2012 in Garmsir, Afghanistan, after being shot by an Afghan civilian while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. While deployed, he was attached to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Marine Corps Capt. Matthew P. Manoukian, 29, Los Altos Hills, Calif., died Aug. 10, 2012 in Sangin district, Afghanistan, after being shot by an Afghan policeman while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Pendleton, Calif.


Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Sky R. Mote, 27, El Dorado, Calif., died Aug. 10, 2012 in Sangin district, Afghanistan, after being shot by an Afghan policeman while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Rivera Jr., 20 Ventura, Calif., died Aug. 10, 2012 in Garmsir, Afghanistan, after being shot by an Afghan civilian while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. While deployed, he was attached to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force.


Army Staff Sgt. Eric S. Holman, 39, Evans City, Penn., died Aug. 15, 2012 in Ghazni province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered an enemy improvised explosive device. He was assigned to 192nd Ordnance Battalion, 52nd Ordnance Group, 20th Support Command, Fort Bragg, N.C. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division and was a member of the Army’s Golden Knights parachute team.


Army Pfc. Andrew J. Keller, 22, Tigard, Ore., died Aug. 15, 2012 in Charkh, Afghanistan when enemy forces attacked his unit with small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Caserma Ederle, Vicenza, Italy.


Navy Petty Officer Technician 1st Class Sean P. Carson, 32, Des Moines, Wash., died Aug. 16, 2012 in a Black Hawk helicopter crash during a firefight with insurgents northeast of Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was assigned to an explosive ordnance disposal mobile unit in San Diego.


Army Pfc. Michael R. Demarsico II, 20, North Adams, Mass., died Aug. 16, 2012 in Panjwa’l, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered an enemy improvised device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.


Army Sgt. Richard A. Essex, 23, of Kelseyville, Calif., died Aug. 16, 2012 in a Black Hawk helicopter crash during a firefight with insurgents northeast of Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.


Navy Special Warfare Operator Petty Officer 1st Class Patrick D. Feeks, 28, Edgewater, Md., died Aug. 16, 2012 in a Black Hawk helicopter crash during a firefight with insurgents northeast of Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was assigned to a West Coast-based SEAL unit in Coronado, Calif.


Army Sgt. Luis A. Oliver Galbreath, 41, San Juan, Puerto Rico, died Aug. 16, 2012 in a Black Hawk helicopter crash during a firefight with insurgents northeast of Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.


Army Chief Warrant Officer Brian D. Hornsby, 37, Melbourne, Fla., died Aug. 16, 2012 in a Black Hawk helicopter crash during a firefight with insurgents northeast of Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Darrel L. Enos, 36, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Aug. 17, 2012 while supporting combat operations in Farah province, Afghanistan. He was a hospital corpsman assigned to 3rd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Lejeune, N.C.


Army Spc. James A. Justice, 21, Grover, N.C., died Aug. 17, 2012 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany from injuries suffered on Aug. 14 from enemy small-arms fire in Wardak province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Caserma Ederle in Vicenza, Italy.


Army Sgt. David V. Williams, 24, Frederick, Md., died Aug. 18, 2012 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of unspecified causes. The cause of death is under investigation. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.


Army Sgt. 1st Class Coater B. Debose, 55, State Line, Miss., died Aug. 19, 2012 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds casued by small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 351st Infantry Regiment, 158th Infantry Brigade, 1st Army Division East, Camp Shelby, Miss.


Army Sgt. Louis R. Torres, 23, Oberlin, Ohio, died Aug. 22, 2012 in San Antonio, Texas, of wounds suffered when he encountered an enemy improvised explosive device Aug. 6 in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.


Army Pfc. Patricia L. Horne, 20, Greenwood, Miss., died Aug. 24, 2012 in Bagram, Afghanistan. She was assigned to the 96th Aviation Support Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Army Spc. Mabry J. Anders, 21, of Baker City, Ore., died Aug. 27, 2012 in Kalagush, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered from enemy small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 4th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.


Army Sgt. Christopher J. Birdwell, 25, Windsor, Colo., died Aug. 27, 2012 in Kalagush, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered from enemy small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 4th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.


Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Jessica M. Wing, 42, Alexandria, Va., died Aug. 27, 2012 in Kuwait City, Kuwait in a noncombat-related incident. She was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 126th Aviation Regiment, Maine National Guard, Bangor, Maine.


Army Pfc. Shane W. Cantu, 20, Corunna, Mich., died Aug. 28, 2012 in Charkh, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he was hit by shrapnel. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Caserma Ederle, Vicenza, Italy.
