U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq

As of Friday, September 9, 2011, at least 4,475 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to iCasualties.org.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 32,159 U.S. service members have been wounded as of July 31, 2011, according to iCasualties.org.

Navy Cmdr. James K. Crawford, 50, East Concord, N.Y., died Sept. 7, 2011 of a heart attack while exercising in Manama, Bahrain. He was assigned to U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, supporting operations at the Combined Maritime Forces Coalition Coordination Center at Naval Support Activity, Bahrain.

U.S. Military Deaths in Afghanistan

As of Friday, September 9, 2011, at least 1,762 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan as a result of the invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to iCasualties.org.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 13,010 U.S. service members have been wounded as of July 31, 2011, according to iCasualties.org.

Army Spc. Christopher J. Scott, 21, Tyrone, N.Y., died Sept. 3, 2011 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 716th Military Police Battalion, 101st Sustainment Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.


Army Pfc. Christophe J. Marquis, 40, Tampa, Fla., died Sept. 4, 2011 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany,of injuries sustained Aug. 27 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.


James W. “Will” Coker, 59, Mount Pleasant, S.C., was pronounced dead Sept. 5, 2011 in Kabul, Afghanistan, while on temporary assignment with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He worked for Naval Facilities Engineering Command Atlantic, Norfolk, Va. [Note: According to the Associated Press, Coker was kidnapped from a power plant and strangled to death; however, an Afghan military official told CBS News that he was found beheaded in eastern Kabul.]


Army Spc. Kevin R. Shumaker, 24, Livermore, Calif., died Aug. 31, 2011 in a stateside hospital of rabies believed to have been contracted while he was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He was assigned to the Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.


Army Spc. Koran P. Contreras, 21, Lawndale, Calif., died Sept. 8, 2011 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.


Army Pfc. Douglas J. Jeffries Jr., 20, Springville, Calif., died Sept. 8, 2011 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.
